An hour later, Phoebe was right in the sweet spot between being tipsy and drunk. She’d had almost an entire bottle of wine, while Caleb had barely touched his. She wriggled to her feet, almost losing her balance, and put a hand on Caleb’s shoulder as she walked past him to the kitchen.

“I’m going to get another bottle,” she called out over her shoulder at him.

A few moments later, both their glasses refilled, she sat back down. If Caleb noticed that there was already a glass missing from the bottle, he said nothing, but just looked at Phoebe with an amused expression.

“I gotta question for you, preacher man,” Phoebe said, a lop-sided grin on her face.

“Shoot.”

“This God of yours, he’s omnipotent, right?”

“Apparently so,” Caleb replied.

“So he knows everything we’re thinking, even if they’re sinful thoughts?”

“Yes.”

Phoebe closed her eyes for a moment before opening them again.

“He knows what I was thinking just now?”

“No.”

“No?” Phoebe looked at Caleb and frowned. “But you said he was omnipotent.”

“Not on a Thursday evening.”

“What do you mean?”

“He has Thursday evenings off.” Caleb put on an awful English accent. “He goes down the pub with his mates on a Thursday.”

Phoebe started laughing and leaned forward, her gown falling away slightly as she did so. Caleb’s eyes never left hers.

“I think you just made that up, preacher man,” Phoebe said, looking at him.

“No, I didn’t,” Caleb replied. “It’s in the Bible.”

“Which chapter? Which verse?”

“I forget.”

“Now I know you made that up, Caleb,” Phoebe said, smiling at him. Her mouth was dry, and she took another sip of wine. She leaned forward some more, and her gown fell away even more. Caleb’s eyes never left hers.

“What do you want, Phoebe?” Caleb asked, his voice low and soft. Phoebe felt the heat rising to her face. She couldn’t tell him what she wanted. What if she was completely misreading everything? What if he was horrified about what she wanted?

“I…” Her voice trailed away. “I don’t really know.” She suddenly felt foolish about the situation she had put them both in. The right thing to do would be to tie her gown and go to bed. But she didn’t want to do that.

“Is it something you want, or something you need?” Caleb asked, his eyes still fixed on her face. Phoebe knew from the draft across her chest that the gown wasn’t covering much, and the slip she was wearing left little to the imagination.

But Caleb’s eyes never left hers.
